Rip It Up: DJ Workshop w/ SPACE Slot 2

Tear Up The Dancefloor is an interactive DJ workshop exploring the music, technology and youth cultures that have transformed dancefloors from the late 1980s to today.
Each session begins with a fast-paced introduction to the rise of DJ and dance culture, using music and video clips to journey through House, Hip Hop, Acid House and Rave, Garage, Grime and Drum & Bass – looking at how DJs, producers and new technology changed the way music was made, performed and experienced.
Participants will then get hands-on with digital DJ equipment, learning the fundamentals of DJing before taking to the decks themselves.
We’ll explore:
* The DJ setup – decks/controllers, mixer, headphones and software
* The controls – pitch, cue, faders and platters
* Choosing music and beat matching – understanding tempo and putting two tracks together
* Mixing and transitions – moving creatively between tracks
* Basic scratching – using the platter as a performance tool
* Hot cues – jumping to and triggering different parts of a track
* FX and samples – adding effects, sounds and creative performance techniques
Skills are introduced through 2–3 short demonstrations, followed immediately by opportunities to try them out.
The session builds towards a DJ Relay, with participants taking turns behind the decks to choose tracks, mix and experiment with the techniques they’ve learned.
No previous DJ or musical experience is needed!

We'll be running this workshop in two sessions, each 1 hr and 30 minutes long. This event page is for slot 2, and your ticket will only be valid for this slot if we are at capacity at either time.

• Age range: 11-18, preferably, but open to 19- 24-year-olds as well.
