About this Event
This month, we're tackling David Graeber and David Wengrow's The Dawn of Everything (704 pages) — a sweeping, myth-shattering reexamination of human history that directly challenges the narrative many of us just absorbed in Sapiens.Forget the tidy story of hunter-gatherers stumbling into agriculture, then hierarchy, then the state. Drawing on decades of new archaeological evidence, Graeber and Wengrow argue that early humans deliberately experimented with radically different ways of organizing society — building cities without kings, seasonal hierarchies that dissolved and reformed, and forms of freedom we've been taught didn't exist until modernity.
This isn't a light read, but it's a rewarding one. Come ready to have some settled assumptions gently (or not so gently) dismantled. We'll dig into the big questions: Was inequality really inevitable? What does "freedom" actually mean across different societies? And if our ancestors had so many more options than we've been told — what does that say about the choices we're making now?
Perfect for anyone who read Sapiens and walked away with more questions than answers.
📖 Fair warning: it's a hefty one at 704 pages — pace yourself and start early.
