Resources, hopes and rising inequalities: Complexities of development in Papua New Guinea (and beyond). A conversation with Dr. Jeff Noro, A/Prof. Monica Minnegal & Dr. Michael Main.
In a moment shaped both by the recent celebration of 50 years of Papua New Guinean independence, and by the prospect of Bougainvillean independence, what role does (or should) resource extraction have in the future of Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, and the PNG-Australia relationship? The promise that wealth from natural resources can deliver development is an enduring one, and has animated the trajectory of post-independence PNG. But the realities of that promise are uneven, and often disappointing, yielding new social, political, and gendered inequalities. And in this, of course, Papua New Guinea is not alone.
Join us for a panel discussion exploring the complexities of resource-led development, and they ways in which Papua New Guinea offers a lens on much wider, global questions about hopes, inequalities, and who gets to benefit from economic transformation.
