I will present findings from my research on resilience and social exclusion among immigrant women from the Global South living in Wrocław.My research asks what happens when we move beyond the broad category of “migrant woman” and begin listening to the complexity behind it: gender, nationality, religion, legal status, motherhood, class, professional identity, and belonging. I will share some of the stories of women who spoke about rebuilding their lives in Poland—about exclusion and loneliness, but also faith, friendship, professional reinvention, agency, and the everyday practices through which resilience is created.
The event will then expand this conversation through the screening of five short films exploring the intersection of migration and disability through the experiences of Ukrainian women.
After the screenings, I will have the pleasure of hosting Dr Eva Duda, sociologist and political scientist at the University of Wrocław, for a discussion about resilience, intersectionality and social exclusion.
I am especially interested in the question:
Should resilience be understood simply as the ability of individuals to adapt—or should we also ask why people are required to be resilient in the first place, and what responsibility institutions and societies have to remove the barriers they face?
