This seminar focuses on the contributions of university-based researchers following the devastating Civil War (2020-2022) in Tigray, Ethiopia. An estimated 600,000 died during the war which included civilian massacres, widespread sexual violence, and the destruction of public services and infrastructure. Schools were closed for 3.5 years, leaving millions of children out-of-school. Following a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, schools started to re-open in 2023, but provision has been partial and intermittent due to ongoing political tensions, disrupting the Right to Education for 2.4 million children in the region. The session draws on experiences from a long-term partnership between researchers at Mekelle University and the University of Bristol involving multiple studies focused on working conditions in schools and pathways to recovery. We consider achievements and tensions, and the indispensable role of local researchers for educational recovery in conflict-affected settings.
