🎬 Experience the powerful exploration of Native American representation in Hollywood through film!As part of the 30th Annual Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast, join us on Tuesday, November 10, at 6:00 PM at the Sumter County Gallery of Art for a special screening of Reel Injun.
This thought-provoking documentary explores the history of Native American representation in Hollywood, examining how Indigenous peoples have been portrayed on screen for more than a century. From the earliest silent films and Hollywood Westerns to contemporary cinema, Reel Injun challenges long-standing stereotypes, misconceptions, and the ways popular culture has shaped public perceptions of Native American identity.
Featuring insights from Native American actors, filmmakers, writers, and cultural leaders, the film combines humor, historical reflection, and personal perspectives to examine the lasting influence of Hollywood portrayals while celebrating the growing movement toward authentic Indigenous storytelling.
More than a documentary about movies, Reel Injun invites audiences to consider the importance of representation, who gets to tell Indigenous stories, and how film can both perpetuate harmful stereotypes and help reclaim cultural narratives.
Join us as we continue celebrating 30 years (1996–2026) of the Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast, bringing Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives to communities across South Carolina.
