The Famous Autumn Red Deer Rut in the Ullswater and Martindale area of the Lake District is a hidden gem as the bellowing of stags echoes around Martindale and Boredale. We listen and watch and immerse ourselves in these autumn sounds. We can experience this truly magical connection to nature as the autumn weather adorns us, if clouds are low, or indeed rising and falling, we still hear the Stags during this time.Our journey will start from Glenridding on the the shores of Ullswater, with a 30 minute trip on the Ullswater Steamers to Howtown (£11:50 additional cost on arrival). The boat ride is weather dependent, if the steamers are off due to high winds we will car share and drive around to Howtown, instead.
From Howtown we will head over to Martindale via a grassy path to the tiny St Martin's Church, Martindale. Then work our way up the valley to Dale Head and beyond, before our ascent onto Bedafell. The path to ascend becomes a typical Lakeland path, although not technical. We can take our time to ascend, listen to the deer and watch with binoculars. If time allows we can weave around the valley top looking down to spot and listen to the deer, before descending to Patterdale & Glenridding via Boredale Hause.

Route distance: 10km-12km, weather dependent
Route Ascent: 450m - 650m, weather and participant and red deer dependent!
TERRAIN: Easy fell walk, some boggy parts and some easy rocky sections and lots of steps down to the end, which can be taken slowly.
