"Recovering climatic information from paleoclimate archives"
Dr Gerard Otiniano, postdoctoral resercher, UQAM
Environmental archives preserve evidence of past climate, but interpreting this evidence requires an accurate understanding of how climatic and local environmental processes are expressed in proxy time series. The relationships between these processes and the resultant proxy signals are complex and often incompletely understood, which complicates both the interpretation of individual time series and their integration into broader climate histories. Individual proxy time series provide valuable insights into past climate, but each reflects a limited range of climatic and environmental conditions. Multiproxy compilations offer a comparatively rich perspective on past climate variability, but combining proxies with different climate and environmental sensitivities, spatial coverage, and chronological uncertainties remain a central challenge. This talk presents my past and ongoing research addressing these questions across a range of spatial and temporal scales, from proxy systematics at individual sites to regional analyses of heterogeneous proxy networks. I will explore advances in proxy interpretation, analytical tools, and approaches to identifying shared climatic information among diverse time series. These themes underpin my ongoing research at UQAM, which focuses on improving multiproxy analytical methods for more informative regional climate reconstructions.
