Reading Between the Lines: The Psychology of Everyday Language

Words seem simple.

But the language we use every day quietly shapes how we think, judge, and make decisions.

A single word choice can change how persuasive a message feels, how trustworthy someone appears, and even how we interpret reality itself.

In this lecture, behavioral scientist Prof. Sam Maglio will explore the hidden psychology of everyday language — revealing how subtle differences in wording influence perception, judgment, and behaviour in ways most of us never notice.

From marketing and politics to everyday conversations, we’ll examine why the words we choose carry more power than we realize — and how learning to read between the lines can change the way we communicate.

Because sometimes the most powerful forces shaping our decisions aren’t loud or obvious — they’re hiding in plain sight in the language around us.

Themes: psychology · language · persuasion · decision-making
