About this Event
How can museums make confident, responsible decisions about their collections? This practical workshop will explore the processes, challenges and opportunities involved in collections rationalisation and disposal, drawing on recent experience at Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums (AAGM).
Thomas Megaw, Lead Curator (Collections Management) at AAGM, has overseen a recently completed Museum Galleries Scotland-funded rationalisation project and developed a flexible approach that has enabled more than 2,000 objects to be deaccessioned from the collection since 2022.
Through practical activities, discussion and shared experience, Thomas will explore how museums can plan and deliver rationalisation projects, navigate approval processes and manage the practical and public-facing challenges involved.
Topics will include:
- Approval processes
- Managing public perception and risk
- Methods of deaccession
- Planning a funded project
- Finding a new home for objects
- Community engagement
The workshop is an opportunity to explore a sometimes challenging aspect of museum work in an open, supportive environment. Whether your museum is actively considering rationalisation or you simply want to better understand the processes, principles and practicalities involved, you’ll gain insights and ideas to take back to your own organisation.
