Nicola and Gordon both started playing the accordion around the age of 6 or 7, when they went to the Joe Burke Accordion School, Cardenden in the 1970s alongside Michael Philip
and James Coutts. After Joe’s untimely death in 1980, they went on to different teachers competing in various solo competitions throughout their teenage years and winning the
UK Championships at various levels up to Virtuoso Solo.
In the 1980s, they also competed as part of the Fife Accordion Band, becoming UK Champions in 1986.
Nicola and Gordon both stopped playing completely for around 25 years, until a chance meeting on Facebook almost seven years ago, when Gordon was looking for someone to
play with him at his brother’s 60th Birthday Party. They then decided to try writing their own duet arrangements and played at a few local Accordion & Fiddle Clubs where they did
their first guest spot just before Lockdown. During Lockdown, they continued to play together on Facebook, making virtual videos with the late Bill Ewan and different collaborations of musicians. In 2024, they made their debut broadcast for BBC’s Take The Floor and were delighted to be awarded the NAAFC Guest Artiste of the Year the same year. Nicola & Gordon play in a unique two part harmony style and they will be joined by Margaret Robertson on piano and Kevin Milne on Drums. HAFC cannot wait to hear this exciting and innovative band.
