"I got drafted, in the spring of 1966, and I was shipped off to Vietnam. When I got out of the service, I had gotten a scholarship to study music in Ohio, and actually my brother was out there as well. Ken McIntyre was teaching, so that was a good place for me...in that time, I formed a band with my brother called Brute Force. Sonny (Sharrock) had been working with Herbie Mann for a while, and they came out to play a concert. Herbie heard our band and ended up recording us. What Ohio was for me was, I didn't have the chops that I thought I needed, so I went out there and worked on them. I grew up hearing doo-wop, so that wasn't a big leap from where we were. That group did play for dances out there; that's what it was for. I could do that and was an integral part of that group at the time. I'd loosened up Brute Force by my free jazz experience, because I had New York roots and I integrated that into what we were doing."— Ted Daniel, to Clifford Allen
"(I)t’s an absolute given that you’d find William Hooker among renegades. A pillar of the NYC jazz, new-music, and experimental landscapes since the 1970s, Hooker has collaborated with music legends from across the spectrum: Billy Bang, David S. Ware, Roy Campbell, William Parker, Elliott Sharp, Sabir Mateen, and Zeena Parkins, just to name a few. He was also instrumental in bringing improvised music to the independent rock underground, playing with guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth for all-improvised sets. His face lights up when he reminisces about those days."
