Raising Relations: Native American Heritage Month KickoffSunday, November 1 | 11:00 AM–2:00 PM
Buckley Park | Durango, Colorado
Join City of Durango Indigenous Ambassador Kristean Velasquez ,& Durango Indigenous Kinship Initiative for Raising Relations: Native American Heritage Month Kickoff, a community gathering celebrating Indigenous cultures, strengthening relationships, and bringing people together in the spirit of unity.
Raising Relations is about building meaningful connections, honoring the rich and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples, recognizing Tribal sovereignty, and creating opportunities for our communities to learn from one another as we call Durango and La Plata County our home.
As part of this special gathering, we will come together for the traditional raising of a tipi in the heart of Durango at Buckley Park, guided by the knowledge and teachings of a Southern Ute Elders and honoring the traditional role of the women who will help raise the tipi. This is an opportunity to witness living traditions, learn from Indigenous knowledge holders, and celebrate the strength of our cultures and the relationships that connect us.
Throughout the gathering, we hope to share stories, teachings, acknowledgments, leadership, and community voices in a respectful and welcoming space. Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the continued presence, strength, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and Tribal Nations today.
We want our young people to see the strength of community, the importance of cultural identity, and the beauty of people coming together while honoring the unique identities, traditions, and sovereignty of each Nation.
By gathering together, we hope to strengthen relationships across generations and communities, learn from one another, and build a greater understanding of the Indigenous peoples whose histories, cultures, and communities are an important part of the place we all call home.
Everyone is welcome! We invite Tribal Nations, Indigenous families, elders, youth, community members, and the general public to join us for this special gathering.
Come connect with relatives and neighbors, celebrate Indigenous heritage, learn from one another, and help us begin Native American Heritage Month in a good way.
All are welcome. We look forward to gathering with you!
