About this Event
Radical Film School x Equalities Work – Film Series #4
Join us at The Foundry for the fourth and final installment of this successful pilot stage of the Radical Film School / Equalities Work film series, an evening of powerful visual storytelling, people power and human rights, this time centred on Racial Justice.
We will be screening the multi award-winning documentary The Empty Grave (2024, dir Cece Mlay & Agnes Lisa Wegner), a personal journey through the global discourse on repatriation. Beyond the debates lies the poignant tale of violated lives and the struggle for a future disentangled from a painful past. The film chronicles the life-long mission of the young lawyer John Mbano whose great-grandfather Songea Mbano, a leader of the Ngoni people, was executed by the German colonial army. His head was taken to Germany for racist research. The family is haunted by this pain to this day, but John and his wife Cesilia are determined to repatriate their ancestor's remains, and confront and dismantle the legacy of racism and colonialism. You can read more about the film, and watch the trailer, here.
This screening is presented by curator Amina Ali, a Radical Film School participant, and will be followed by a discussion with a representative from Open Restitution Africa.
