About this Event
Join us to celebrate Gwendolyn Alker’s forthcoming biography on María Irene Fornés and a discussion of the ways it challenges the conventions of biography. Fornés and Her Friends: The Making of La Maestra of the American Theatre will be the first biography of this enigmatic and influential figure. Named for the playwright’s best-known play, the book tells her story through the lives of eight women whom Irene loved, and who loved her in return.
Part pre-release book party, part philosophical play, this conversation between Alker and Fred Moten will consider what it means to write a life history of Fornés and other pre-Stonewall figures. A rethinking of the nature of biography—identity and archive, storytelling and fact—will no doubt ensue.
