🌈 QUEER SWANA Shared Meal & Movie Night

A monthly gathering for queer SWANA folks and allies to come together around a shared meal, watch a movie, and discuss it together afterward.

This event takes place every first Tuesday of the month! Join us on November 3rd at the welcoming space generously offered by the folks at KindSpace (400 Cooper St.).

We know life happens, conversations run long, and time in SWANA cultures can be… flexible. The venue is accessible, and doors open at 6:00 pm. We’ll start gathering at 6:30 pm, and the movie will begin around 7:15 pm. You’re welcome to join for any part of the evening. There’s no pressure to be there for all three. What matters most is showing up with curiosity, care, and an open and inclusive mindset.

Whether this is your first time or your tenth, queer SWANA folks and respectful allies are welcome in this shared space.

6:30–7:15 Sharing food and catching up on the latest gossip

7:15–8:45 Getting cozy together for the movie

8:45–9:30 Sharing thoughts, feelings, questions. No right answers required

🍉 About the food

This is a shared, community-style meal.

If you’re able to bring food, please do. Homemade, store-bought, sweet, savoury, … all sizes and colours are welcome.

If bringing food isn’t an option, you’re invited to contribute what you can (suggested $15). A small team of volunteers will be preparing home-cooked, grandma-style meals with a lot of love (and yes, some of us Arab gays really do know our way around a kitchen!).

No one is expected to bring both food and money. Come in the way that works for you.

👥 About the people

This is a volunteer-based, community-powered event. It truly takes a village, and everyone’s care helps keep the evening warm and welcoming. If you’re able to help out, whether with food, setup, or cleanup, it’s always appreciated. No, Mama won’t be here to pick up your plate; but community care goes a long way 😉

🎬 About the movie

We aim to announce each month’s movie at least two weeks in advance. There might not be one hundred options to choose from, but the pool is rich. If you have suggestions, ideas, or strong feelings about what we can watch next, please share. We promise we won’t judge.

The movie is in Arabic, with English subtitles.

Mr. Gay Syria follows two gay Syrian refugees, Husein and Mahmoud, as they search for freedom, acceptance, and a new beginning. From Istanbul to Berlin, they share one dream: to compete in an international beauty pageant and make their voices and identities visible. But can their dream survive the challenges of exile, discrimination, and the struggle to live openly as gay men?

ندعوكم للانضمام إلينا في لقاء شهري يجمع أفراد مجتمع الميم من منطقة جنوب غرب آسيا وشمال أفريقيا (SWANA) والداعمين، لنتشارك وجبة شهية، نشاهد فلمًا معًا، ونتحاور حوله بعد العرض.

تُقام الأمسية في أول يوم ثلاثاء من كل شهر. ندعوكم للانضمام إلينا في 3 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر في المساحة الداعمة والمرحِّبة بالجميع والتي يقدّمها فريق KindSpace الواقع في Cooper Street 400.

المكان سهل الوصول وخالي من العوائق، وتُفتح الأبواب عند الساعة 6:00 مساءً. يبدأ التجمع الساعة 6:30 مساءً، ويبدأ عرض الفيلم حوالي 7:15 مساءً.

أهلاً بكم للانضمام إلى أي جزء من الأمسية، لا يوجد أي التزام بالحضور الكامل. الأهم هو الحضور بروح منفتحة، واحترام متبادل، ورغبة في المشاركة.

سواء كانت هذه مشاركتكم الأولى أو كنتم من الحضور الدائمين، فإن أفراد مجتمع الميم والداعمين مرحّبٌ بهم دائمًا في هذه المساحة المشتركة.

الوجبة تحت عنوان روح المشاركة.

هذه وجبة مشتركة تجمع كل الحضور إذا كان بإمكانك إحضار الطعام، فهذا رائع! سواء كان محضراً في المنزل أو جاهزاً، جميع الأنواع مرحب بها. إذا لم تتمكنوا من إحضار الطعام، يمكنكم المساهمة بما تستطيعون (الاقتراح: 15 دولارًا). فريق صغير من المتطوعين سيُعد وجبات منزلية على الطريقة التقليدية (ومع حبة مسك، لعيونك).

لا يُتوقَّع من أحد إحضار الأكل والمساهمة المالية معًا. تعالوا بالطريقة التي تناسبكم.

هذه فعالية مجتمعية تعتمد على التعاون وروح التطوع، حيث المساهمة من قبل كل فرد مهمة لخلق جو دافئ وترحيبي.

يروي الفيلم قصة لاجئين سوريين مثليين، حسين ومحمود، اللذين يحاولان إعادة بناء حياتهما في المنفى والبحث عن الحرية والقبول. يجمعهما حلم المشاركة في مسابقة جمال عالمية، في محاولة لكسر العزلة والتعبير عن هويتهما وإثبات وجودهما. لكن في ظل تحديات اللجوء والتمييز والضغوط الاجتماعية، هل سيتمكنان من تحقيق حلمهما؟
