“So, what do you think?” Every eye in the room turns to you. Your boss asks for a quick update you didn’t plan to give. Someone at a party asks, “So, what do you do?” and your mind goes blank.
Being put on the spot happens to everyone. Freezing doesn’t have to.
The people who seem naturally quick on their feet aren’t improvising from nothing. They’ve prepared for the unprepared moment, and that’s a skill anyone can learn.
💡 Get Spot-Ready Before You Walk In
- Use PREP when your mind goes blank. State your Point, give a Reason, add an Example, then restate your Point. Four steps, and you have a complete answer to almost any question.
- Buy yourself a breath. Pausing, repeating the question, or saying “Good question, let me think about that” gives you three seconds to organize. Silence feels long to you but thoughtful to your listener.
- Keep a few stories in your back pocket. A challenge you overcame, a lesson you learned, a moment you’re proud of. Most surprise questions can be answered with a story you already know well.
- Rehearse the questions you know are coming. “Tell me about yourself.” “What are you working on?” “Any updates?” If you’ll be asked it eventually, prepare for it now.
- Plan your landing. When you’re nervous, the hardest part is stopping. End by restating your point, then stop talking with confidence.

- 10:10 AM: Toastmasters program begins, featuring prepared speeches, constructive evaluations, and Table Topics (impromptu speaking, where you can put PREP to the test in real time)
- 11:25 AM: Q&A and wrap-up
