About this Event
This event is part of this year's Neddy Artists awardee Jo Cosme's programming residency at the Seattle Public Library - Central Library. The residency program, Puerto Rico: Beyond the Postcard, explores colonialism, migration, and resistance in Borikén, Puerto Rico. Through a photo essay exhibition (opening on Oct 8th at 6pm), film screenings, talks, workshops, panel discussions, and studio visits, the series brings Puerto Rican histories and lived experiences to the forefront beyond the tourist image of paradise. All programs are free and open to the public.
Set against the backdrop of contemporary Puerto Rico, ESTA ISLA (THIS ISLAND) explores the resilience, contradictions, and hopes of a community navigating complex social and cultural realities. With intimate storytelling and powerful imagery, the film portrays an island in constant dialogue with its history and future. ESTA ISLA offers a poignant portrait of Puerto Rican youth caught between desperation and hope. With award-winning cinematography and powerful storytelling, it sheds light on the resilience of a community navigating urgent social realities. Q&A via Zoom after the movie.
