What does it actually look like to give birth while incarcerated?
Join Ostara Initiative and the Oregon Pr*son Birth Project (OPBP) for an immersive Pr*son Birth Simulation designed to help community members understand the realities of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care within the carceral system.
Ostara Initiative and OPBP bring Pr*son birth simulations to communities across the country, creating an opportunity to experience what a Pr*son birth can look and feel like with a doula—and without one. Through the simulation, participants will see how the presence of a trained birth worker can impact a person’s experience of labor, advocacy, support, and connection while navigating incarceration.
Following the simulation, we’ll hold a talk-back and Q&A where participants can process what they experienced, ask questions, and learn more about the work of the Oregon Pr*son Birth Project.

The second half of the event will be a 90-Day Design Day.
OPBP is currently collaborating with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to develop a 90-day sprint focused on creating better outcomes for people who are pregnant, giving birth, and navigating postpartum while incarcerated.
We want the community at the table.
Together, we’ll identify the challenges that need to be addressed, generate solutions, and determine what we can actually accomplish in 90 days.

You don't need to be a birth worker or have experience working inside prisons to participate. We’re inviting doulas, healthcare providers, advocates, formerly incarcerated people, community members, students, researchers, and anyone who believes that incarceration should not determine the quality of someone's birth or postpartum experience.
Come experience the simulation. Ask questions. Bring your ideas. Then help us turn those ideas into action.
