About this Event
Led by Plymouth Recycling Officers this session explores how food waste can be turned into electricity.
The session will begin with a short presentation exploring food waste, what happens to food waste collected in Plymouth, and why recycling our food waste is important.
The session will then introduce the concept of energy. We will learn that all food contains energy and investigate how a potato can be used as part of a simple electrical circuit.
Working in groups, we will use potatoes, crocodile clips and bulbs to create a working circuit. As we build our circuits, we will learn how the potato acts as a battery, allowing electrical energy to travel through the circuit and power the bulb. This hands-on activity encourages scientific investigation while reinforcing key messages about food waste.
This workshop has been developed for children aged 7-11 years old, but we leave it up to parents/guardians to decide if this is likely to be suitable for their child and attendance is open for all ages.
Children 8+ years old may attend the session without an adult, but will require a consent form to be completed via electronic form prior to the session.
Children under 8 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult throughout the session.
