This workshop will be divided into two halves, with Jacob guiding participants through two different methods for beginning a portrait.The aim is not to leave the workshop with a fully resolved painting, but rather to explore and illuminate two distinct pathways that can ultimately lead to a similar destination. By comparing these approaches, participants will gain a greater understanding of how the early stages of a painting can be approached with flexibility and intention.
Jacob strongly believes that having a flexible approach to painting is key — whether working in portraiture, landscape, still life or abstraction. This workshop is an opportunity to explore that idea through practical demonstrations and hands-on painting.
What you’ll learn
Drawing — How to use comparative measurement and construction techniques to establish proportions and capture a sense of likeness early in the process.
Tone — How to utilise light and shadow to create convincing form and believable skin tones.
Edges — How to establish a variety of hard, soft and lost edges from the early stages of a painting.
Colour — The basics of colour mixing using a limited palette, with insight into colour relativity and how colours influence one another.
Materials & Techniques — The fundamentals of working with oil paint, including how to handle and use brushes and other materials effectively.
Materials
All materials, including brushes, will be provided.
If you have your own brushes, you are welcome to bring them. A range of different sizes in either hog hair or firm synthetic hair is recommended.
