Please Call Me a Golden Flower….Until Eternity
Since ancient times, women have been represented as fallen figures—symbols of evil who lure men into lust. Across religion, art, and literature, the writing and depiction of such figures have been largely constructed by men.
“Dok Thong” is a derogatory term used to condemn women who commit sexual misconduct or are sexually promiscuous, with historical roots dating back at least to the Ayutthaya period. To this day, stories about women cast in this role have been reproduced countless times, with these women invariably destined to face death as their final punishment. The persistence of these narratives acts as a theatrical performance of moral instruction, shaping values and myths while simultaneously justifying the use of violence against stigmatized women.
Please Call Me a Golden Flower….Until Eternity critiques the discourse of “Dok Thong” by deconstructing the patriarchal power structures embedded in Malai Choopinij’s novel Chua Fa Din
Salai (Eternity). I employ a Northern Thai gold-leaf application technique known as Lai Kham, traditionally used in temple murals to depict sacred Buddhist narratives, applying floral gold-leaf patterns onto both photographic and text-based works. In the photographic works, I use my own female body—a gendered body once written and defined by others—to portray the character of the “Dok Thong” woman, Yupadee, in various scenes from the novel. The text-based works consist of printed pages from the original novel, drawing on the visual language of Samut Khoi, traditional folding manuscripts used for sacred Buddhist texts, utilizing black text camouflaged against a black background and highlighting specific sentences in white. These photographic and text-based works are installed as diptychs, bringing photography and text into relation in order to forge a new meaning and identity for the “Dok Thong” woman.
Sexual violence is a pervasive problem worldwide. In Thailand, deeply ingrained gender norms and biases continue to contribute to violence against women. Through this series of works, I intend to expose the mechanisms of patriarchal myth-making that normalize violence against women by framing it as justified, in order to raise awareness and combat the negative attitudes that continue to harm women to this day.
To all women accused of being a “Dok Thong.”
