New to Mandarin? Learn pinyin, the key to reading and speaking it, through a 2-hour card game. Total beginners welcome.
About this Event

New to Mandarin? Start here, with a deck of cards.

Pinyin is the key that unlocks Mandarin: it’s how you read, type and pronounce every word. Most people learn it from charts and lists. At Play Pinyin, you learn it by playing.

In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll play card games built around the three building blocks of pinyin: initials (like b, zh, x), finals (like ao, ing, üe) and the four tones. Put the right cards together, say the sound out loud, and you’ve made a real Mandarin syllable.

b + ao + ˇ = bǎo (宝, treasure)

What you’ll walk away with

  • A clear picture of how pinyin works: initials, finals and tones
  • Practice saying the sounds that trip most beginners up, like zh, x, q and ü
  • An ear for the four tones, and how they change a word’s meaning
  • Confidence to read pinyin on your own, ready for apps, classes or your first Learnése Mission

Who it’s for

  • Complete beginners, with no Mandarin needed
  • Learners whose pinyin still feels shaky
  • Anyone who learns better by doing than by memorising

The details

  • When: Saturday 24 October, 2–4pm
  • Where: Griffin Centre, Canberra
  • Group size: small group, so everyone gets to play and speak
  • Hosts: bilingual Learnése hosts who guide every round
