Plastic:Elastic is a screendance filmed in a 200-acre sculpture park on Hornby Island, British Columbia, on the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. Created in collaboration between dancer Zoe Jordan, filmmaker Anandi Brownstein, musician Trent Freeman, and the late modernist sculptor Jeffrey Rubinoff, the film explores the interrelation between animate and inanimate, flesh and steel, the formal and the improvisational. The camera moves as a dance partner. The original score weaves organic and inorganic, musical and non-instrumental sound into the film’s sensorial world.

The evening pairs the screening with a live violin performance by composer Trent Freeman and an embodied movement practice with dancer Zoe Jordan, carrying the film’s spirit of responsive, improvisational movement off the screen and into the room. No experience necessary.

Zoe Jordan

An interdisciplinary movement and performance artist and teacher from Vancouver, Canada (traditional, uncededterritories of the Coast Salish peoples), Zoe is interested in material and spatial encounters through movement. She is specifically passionate about improvisation, a literal ‘meeting the moment’ which bypasses the intellect, relying on some other, embodied sensibility.

Zoe’s teaching draws from a broad palette of movement practices and her creative work is typically site-specific, engaging with the immediate surroundings in a kind of duet, as in Plastic:Elastic and Forest Work, approaching a particular place (or mossy tree) with curiosity, inquiry, and mutuality, seeing what is evoked physically, aesthetically, emotionally. || www.zoejordan.ca

Trent Freeman

Trent Freeman is a violinist who bridges traditional fiddle and modern innovation, moving fluidly between community dance halls, European philharmonic stages, and underground clubs. For twelve years he has been a driving force behind The Fretless, the internationally recognized folk string quartet whose five albums, extensive North American and European touring, and Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year have established them as one of Canada’s most celebrated folk ensembles. His electronic project Speaker Face takes the opposite approach, blending acoustic instruments with synths and natural sounds into what listeners describe as a mystical, groove-driven experience. A staple of both the Vancouver and Toronto music scenes, Trent is equally in demand as a recording artist, collaborator, and performer, and is currently at work on new projects with The Fretless and a solo album for violin, piano and percussion.

Anandi Brownstein

Anandi Brownstein is a documentary filmmaker and cinematographer based on Coast Salish territory in Vancouver, BC. Raised between the mountains of Northern India and Interior British Columbia, she developed an early curiosity about the power of story to shape how we understand the world and one another. This curiosity led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Anthropology and a graduate diploma in Communications before ultimately finding her true calling in documentary filmmaking.

Anandi’s work has been featured in top-tier festivals, including TIFF (Highway to Heaven, 2019), Planet in Focus (S’yewyah: Awaken, Audience Choice Award, 2023), DOXA (Have You Heard Judi Singh?, 2025), the Banff Mountain Film Festival and Whistler Film Festival (Wildflowers, 2024) and the Leo award winning Search & Rescue: North Shore Knowledge Network docu-series. As a director, she has created work for CBC Gem (Following Folk, 2023; Canada’s a Drag, 2024) and had films premiere at DOXA (Cypher, 2021) and the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (Tayybeh, 2018).
