About this Event
What exactly is a bookplate? Are they simply an ownership label, or more than that - a miniature work of art? In some contexts, you might say they’re a bit like trading cards or other collectibles.
Join Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections staff for an up-close session looking at the art of the bookplate. We’ll look at examples from all over our extensive rare book collection and consider what they can tell us about book history, ownership and collecting. Be prepared to find them in books, in books about bookplates, and even in bookplate collections with no books at all.
Be warned, you may come away inspired to design an Ex Libris bookplate of your own.
These Thursday afternoon sessions run right after the Notes on Tāmaki concert. It’s the perfect midday outing: live music and a rare opportunity to discover the remarkable stories held within our collections.
Notes on Tāmaki concerts: 12.10 to 1 pm
Piringatahi: 2- 3 pm
