F2F day module

Introduction to Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs).

  • Epidemiology, prevalence and clinical significance.
  • Biopsychosocial model of TMD and orofacial pain.
  • Brief Revision of Masticatory System Anatomy & Biomechanics
  • Introduction to aetiology and pathophysiology of TMDs
  • Oral behaviour & TMD
  • Awake and sleep bruxism.
  • Oral parafunction.


Assessment of the Masticatory System

  • Subjective and objective assessment.
  • TMD classification via DC/TMD.


Introduction to Domestic guidelines on the assessment of TMD

  • Royal College of Surgeons guidelines.


Management of TMDs

  • Exercise & Manual therapy of Masticatory system.
  • Education & behavioural approaches for TMDs.
  • Supported self-management.
  • Overview of pharmacological, injection, oral splinting and psychological interventions.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: physiotherapy, dentistry, psychology and medicine.

Case Studies and Clinical Reasoning of simple TMD patients.

Tutor: Helen Cowgill Bsc(hons) , MMACP, MAACP

Helen Cowgill was one of the original founding members of ACPTMD. Helen is highly specialised with over 20 years’ experience and has completed extensive training in the management of TMD within the UK and Internationally. She has studied under and worked with some of the world’s most recognised professionals in this speciality including Mariano Rocabado. Helen works within the private sector and NHS where Helen assisted setting up the first pioneering and unique TMJ MDT Clinic in 2009 within the UK. She is the Clinical Director of TMJ Physio which is a private practice Clinic dedicated to patients suffering with TMD and Orofacial Pain. Helen is passionate about TMJ treatment and is regularly invited to deliver lectures Nationally and Internationally on the subject, presents at professional Conferences regarding TMD and has had numerous publications in highly regarded peer reviewed Journals. Helen has also authored the TMJ Chapter in the Physiotherapy book Musculoskeletal Examination and Assessment.


To ensure the financial viability of the courses, the ACPTMD will require 5 attendees as a minimum per course. If there are insufficient attendees, then the ACPTMD reserves the right to cancel the course 3 weeks prior and reschedule it to a later date. Attendees will have the option to have their place transferred to a course at a later date (bear in mind this may not be the same venue) or receive a refund.
