Referring to the antique peoples of 'Phoenicia' (current Lebanon) well-known for their commercial and cultural influence across the Mediterranean, Phoenician Drive is a Brussels sextet blending psychedelic rock'n'roll with traditional music. The gigantic diversity of the musical traditions still vibrant today in Turkey, the Middle-East, Cyprus, Greece, North-Africa, Sicily, Andalusia (and many more) provides an endless playground on which the band can explore, experiment, divert, and reshape beats and motives to give them a new form and thus a new meaning. Songs slowly materialize from the anachronic syncretic magma as the 6 musicians carve a space where the electric oud and darbuka can freely meet distorted guitars and contemporary pop.
After 2 EPs (Two Coins for the Boatman, GLOW) and an eponym live album, Phoenician Drive is putting out a second LP called Shadowboxing, an 8 track call to pacific arms in these surreal modern times addressing dictatorship, covid lock-downs and post-sovietism with short ubuesque choruses and long trance-seeking tight ropes on which creatures of the past can emerge and dance under broken lamp posts. The live stage remains the ideal setting where tracks—particularly longer pieces—can truly come to life and unfold to their full potential, so do not miss this first presentation in AB Club.
