Your practical day is led by a qualified clinical trainer who demonstrates every step of venepuncture before you try it yourself. You practise on simulation arms with real clinical equipment, from vein selection and the order of draw to aftercare, following National Occupational Standard CHS132. Pass the written and practical assessments and you leave with a CPD-accredited certificate, accepted by the NHS and verifiable online.
Your practical day takes place at PLAB Guide Training Centre on Moseley Road, Levenshulme, which is convenient for learners travelling from Levenshulme, Longsight, Burnage, Didsbury, Stockport and the surrounding areas, with free on-road parking nearby.
No previous healthcare experience is needed. This phlebotomy course suits school leavers, career changers, healthcare assistants and clinicians from across Greater Manchester, including Stockport, Salford and Trafford. Each group is limited to 20 learners, so you get genuine hands-on time. When you are ready for full competency, progress to Advanced Phlebotomy Training (Part 02). - Vein anatomy and the circulatory system
- Vacutainers, butterfly needles and tourniquets
- Order of draw and tube colour coding
- Infection prevention and hand hygiene
- Patient ID, communication and consent
- Labelling, transport and chain of custody
- Sharps safety and needlestick procedure
- Legal and ethical duties
Module 2 · 7.5 hours · In person
Practical
- Choosing the right vein: median cubital, cephalic and basilic
- Tourniquet use and venepuncture technique
- Simulation-arm practice with real equipment
- Repeated dry-lab practice with trainer feedback
- Calming anxious patients and tricky veins
- Aftercare and complications
- Written and practical assessments

Learn from a GMC-Registered Doctor
Your practical day is led by a medical doctor registered with the General Medical Council, with more than five years’ experience in NHS clinical practice. Every demonstration, supervised attempt and assessment on the day is carried out under their direct guidance.
