James Hogg (University of Melbourne), 'Anti-fascism in interwar Australia: the transnational making of a militant social movement, 1922-1939'PhD completion seminar
This thesis traces the emergence of anti-fascism in Australia from 1922 until 1939. Challenging a striated Australian historiography, it examines the discursive strategies, repertoires of action, and ideational forms Australian activists developed to confront interwar fascism, then a major threat on the international stage. Entwining transnational history with social movement studies, it argues these practices produced an anti-fascist social movement incorporating networks spanning the Communist International, European diaspora communities, and Indigenous Australian activists. By situating this interwar movement within global flows of interaction and exchange, this thesis contributes to Australian political history, transnational anti-fascist studies, settler-colonial studies, and the entangled history of ‘White Australia’.
