About this Event
Perspective is one of the most powerful tools an artist can learn, and it's certainly not just for those who enjoy drawing. Whether you're painting a still life, capturing a landscape, or creating an urban scene, understanding perspective can transform the way you approach your artwork.
Perspective allows us to create the illusion of depth and dimension on a flat surface, helping us understand how objects relate to one another in space. It's a fundamental skill that can bring greater accuracy, realism, and a convincing sense of depth to both drawings and paintings.
In this three-hour, hands-on workshop, we'll explore the fundamentals of one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective, breaking down what can seem like a complicated subject into simple, manageable steps.
Through a series of demonstrations followed by practical drawing exercises, I'll guide you through the principles of perspective, helping you understand not just how it works, but why it works. You'll learn how to use horizon lines, vanishing points, and construction lines to create convincing depth, scale, and spatial relationships.
What You'll Learn
- Why perspective is an essential tool for both drawing and painting.
- How to understand and use horizon lines and vanishing points.
- How to construct forms using one-point perspective.
- How to create depth and dimension using two-point perspective.
- An introduction to three-point perspective and more dramatic viewpoints.
- How to apply these principles to still life, landscapes, urban scenes, and your own artistic practice.
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is designed for anyone interested in improving their artistic skills, whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter looking to strengthen your understanding of perspective.
You don't need to be interested in architectural drawing to benefit from this workshop. The principles we'll explore are equally valuable when painting a bowl of fruit on a table, a winding road through a landscape, or a bustling city street.
No previous experience with perspective is necessary.
Building a Strong Foundation
The goal of this workshop isn't to create a finished masterpiece in three hours, but to give you a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills that you can continue to build upon.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a clearer understanding of how perspective works and, more importantly, how to recognize and apply it in your own artwork.
Perspective is more than a drawing technique. It's a way of understanding and representing the three-dimensional world around us.
What to bring
Students are asked to bring a ruler around 18", a pen and pencil.
