In this imaginative retelling of the classic ballet set deep in an enchanted swamp, an alligator prince and a beautiful pelican princess fall in love while battling the evil sorcerer Rougarou to break his curse. Filled with Southern charm and enchanting swamp creatures, this bayou-inspired tale brings a beloved story to life in a magical new way.A live performance of Pelican Lake will premiere at the Red River Revel on Friday, October 9th at 3pm in the Children’s Area Stage at Festival Plaza. The book, written and illustrated by local artist and teacher, Emily Welch will feature company dancers from Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet (SMB) dancing original choreography by Artistic Director Kathryn Drake McDowell. The performance will also be accompanied by the Centenary Youth Orchestra, guest conducted by Zack Grant.
This unique collaboration combines literature, visual arts, dance, and music into a family-friendly experience designed to inspire creativity, imagination, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. The project celebrates local artistic talent while providing young musicians and dancers the opportunity to perform at one of our region’s most beloved cultural festivals celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026.
