What does a film sound like and how does sound shape the way we experience it?
On 29 October at 19:00, Polish Cinema for Beginners invites you to CUKR for a screening of Tadeusz Konwicki’s "Salto" (1965), followed by a conversation with Tomasz Ludward, a film music critic specialising in the history and sound of cinema.
About film
A mysterious stranger arrives in a small provincial town, introducing himself as Kowalski-Malinowski. As he recounts different versions of his past, the people around him begin to question who he really is. Blurring the boundaries between memory, fantasy and reality, Salto is an enigmatic portrait of a community haunted by its past and the stories it tells itself.
Following the screening, we’ll turn our attention to film music and the broader role of sound in Polish cinema. Together with Tomasz Ludward, we’ll explore the history and significance of film music in Poland, consider how sound shapes our cinematic experience, and take a closer look at the choices made in Salto itself. The conversation will also leave room for questions, reflections and comments from the audience.
Our guest
Tomasz Ludward writes about film music for filmmusic.pl and serves as the Polish regional coordinator for the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA). He has interviewed Oscar-winning composers Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, The Last of Us) and Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley), and is associated with the Krakow Film Music Festival. In September 2026, he gave a presentation on the music of Alexandre Desplat at Kino Nowe Horyzonty in Wrocław.
