About this Event

Arlie Hochschild has spent a decade thinking and writing about communities on the political right. For her bestselling Strangers in Their Own Land (2016), she embedded in Lousiana's Calcasieu Parish to help explain the Tea Party to Americans who were bewildered by it. Eight years later, she returned with Stolen Pride, about Pikeville, Kentucky—a MAGA stronghold in one of the country’s whitest and poorest congressional districts. A New York Times Best Book of the Year, it makes the case that the region’s politics are driven less by policies or economics than by shame and a narrative of “stolen” pride.

Join California magazine’s Pat Joseph in conversation with Hochschild as they discuss what she’s learned from her time amongst Donald Trump’s supporters and how that knowledge might help us mend our fractured democracy.
