This October, we’re reading Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, a chilling dystopian horror novel exploring morality, consumption, power, and what happens when cruelty becomes normalized.
After a virus makes animal meat unsafe to eat, governments legalize the breeding and slaughter of humans for consumption. Marcos works at a processing plant and tries not to think too deeply about the system he helps maintain. But when he is given a live woman as a gift, he begins questioning what society has accepted—and his own role within it.
Disturbing, thought-provoking, and difficult to put down, Tender Is the Flesh gives us plenty to unpack about dehumanization, capitalism, language, and the limits of empathy.
