Opera in Context: An Illustrated Exploration with Claire Caldwell

What if you could experience opera not just as music, but as story, history, theatre and human expression?
Join Claire Caldwell for an illustrated exploration of the fascinating world of opera, bringing its history and evolution to life through stories, images, commentary and live vocal performances.
Opera has evolved across centuries, shaped by changing cultures, composers, performers and audiences. In this engaging and accessible session, Claire will explore how opera developed and introduce some of the key moments, styles and characters that have shaped this extraordinary art form.
Along the way, you'll hear live performances from university-level singers, bringing the music and stories to life in the room.
Rather than simply listening to a collection of famous arias, this is an opportunity to understand the world behind the music — how opera has changed, why different styles emerged, and what makes the art form so enduring.
There will also be optional moments of interaction, making this a lively and engaging experience whether you're already an opera lover or simply curious to discover what all the fuss is about.
Meet Claire Caldwell
Claire Caldwell is a music educator, choral director and founder of Musicaltasty, an initiative dedicated to transforming lives through music.
Formerly the Performing Arts Manager and Director of Choral Music at Dilworth School, Claire spent many years leading its vocal programme and shaping the internationally recognised choir Fortissimo.
Under her direction, the choir became known for its powerful performances of works in Te Reo Māori, as well as innovative medleys in Pasifika languages — championing cultural storytelling through music on a global stage.
Claire is passionate about helping people unlock their potential and embracing vulnerability as a pathway to growth. Her work includes guiding non-singers to find their voice as well as supporting experienced performers to strengthen their craft.
She has also toured extensively with the multi-award-winning operatic trio Sol3 Mio as an accompanist and served as Musical Director for their concert DVD Ladies and Gentlemen – Sol3 Mio in Concert.
