This exhibition brings together a significant collection of works by fifteen artists from Baja California, Mexico. Originally from the region or from many parts across the country, these painters have constructed an imaginary world shaped by their experience of the geographical and human landscape of the Baja California border.
The northern part of the country has developed its own history, largely untouched by the historical ups and downs of central Mexico and far from any epicenter that influences its development. Thus, Baja California painting has an independent history that does not imitate other places, whether the center of the republic or the neighboring country to the north. Its genealogy is not derived from post-revolutionary Mexican painting or the artists associated with the"Ruptura" movement, which defined much of Mexican art in the last century. Baja California painting is essentially contemporary, emerging between the late1950s and early 1960s.
These artists' works outline the first chapters of the history of contemporary painting in this region, and these creators traced their genealogy. They are the pioneers of a history of Baja California art being written from their own perspectives. Their paintings are unique, free from any formal or historical constraints. They are the result of the artists' personal universes, not their historical place or affiliation with other creative or intellectual works or discourses. These paintings belong to themselves, not to a genealogy imposed by styles or schools.
Contrary to what one might think, Baja California's peripheral and borderline status offers enormous creative freedom. It is precisely in this “borderline periphery, whose chaotic appearance is due precisely to the fact that it is in turmoil,” as Spanish writer José Luis Sampedro conceptualized the idea of the border, where this painting finds its most genuine energy.
These painters have constructed their imaginary world from the fluidity and infinite possibilities of real and fictional paths offered by the border. If we view this exhibition as a geography, it reveals itself as a region liberated from the weight of dominant, codified art history. Its artists inhabit—and have inhabited—an expansive present, detached from constraining memories and oblivious to imposed heritage. This explains the immense imaginative richness of their works
