On Sofa #3 mời gọi bạn bè nghệ thuật cùng tới vui chơi trên ghế dài trong một tối điện ảnh. Người tham gia sẽ cùng nhau thưởng thức bộ phim “Cát bụi và kim loại” (82 phút, 2022) và trò chuyện với đạo diễn Esther Johnson.

🔴 VỀ BỘ PHIM:
CÁT BỤI & KIM LOẠI (Dust & Metal) là một tác phẩm điện ảnh tài liệu sáng tạo của nghệ sĩ Esther Johnson, được thực hiện qua sự hợp tác giữa Live Cinema UK và Hội đồng Anh. Dự án đánh dấu sự kết nối đặc biệt giữa Viện Phim Việt Nam tại Hà Nội và Trung tâm TPD nhằm khai phá những chất liệu điện ảnh lưu trữ quý giá.
Bộ phim soi rọi những mảnh ghép về sự tự do tại Việt Nam từ quá khứ đến hiện tại, lấy cảm hứng từ hình ảnh phương tiện di chuyển đặc trưng là xe máy. Giữa một quốc gia gần trăm triệu dân với mật độ xe cơ giới thuộc hàng top đầu khu vực, những chiếc xe hai bánh len lỏi qua từng con hẻm nhỏ hẹp, chuyên chở từ nhu yếu phẩm đến hơi thở cuộc sống thường nhật, tạo nên một bản giao hưởng âm thanh đặc sắc của phố thị.
Bằng cách tái cấu trúc các thước phim tư liệu hiếm kết hợp cùng phần âm nhạc trực tiếp từ nghệ sĩ Xinh Xô, CÁT BỤI & KIM LOẠI đưa những di sản điện ảnh đến gần hơn với công chúng. Kịch bản phim còn đan cài những cuộc trò chuyện sâu sắc giữa đạo diễn Johnson cùng các nhân vật tầm cỡ như đạo diễn Trần Văn Thủy và họa sĩ Đặng Ái Việt, khai thác khía cạnh ký ức và lời kể lịch sử.
Chiếc xe máy không chỉ là phương tiện mà còn là biểu tượng của lao động, sự dịch chuyển và khát vọng vươn lên. Từ những chiếc xe đạp thầm lặng trong ngõ nhỏ thời chiến đến làn sóng xe máy điện hiện đại trước thách thức về khí hậu và các quy hoạch đô thị mới, lịch sử phát triển của phương tiện này luôn song hành cùng những biến chuyển của xã hội Việt Nam.
Vượt ra ngoài những hình ảnh du lịch quen thuộc hay những góc nhìn rập khuôn từ Hollywood, CÁT BỤI & KIM LOẠI mang đến một lăng kính điện ảnh khác lạ. Tác phẩm mời gọi khán giả đắm chìm vào không gian nghe nhìn để thấu cảm sâu sắc hơn về một nền di sản văn hóa độc đáo đang trong quá trình chuyển mình đầy phức hợp.

Esther Johnson (MA, Royal College of Art) là một nghệ sĩ và nhà làm phim có tác phẩm nằm ở giao điểm giữa hình ảnh động và phim tài liệu. Thông qua phim, âm thanh, nhiếp ảnh và tài liệu lưu trữ, tác phẩm của Esther khám phá những lịch sử xã hội bị bỏ qua và bị gạt ra ngoài lề xã hội, làm nền tảng cho những câu chuyện kể về cộng đồng, những mâu thuẫn và sự kiến tạo nơi chốn. Trọng tâm thực hành của cô là kết nối tới những điều vắng bóng và thiếu sót trong hồ sơ lịch sử, xem xét cách quyền lực được hình thành như thế nào, những câu chuyện được kể, lưu trữ hoặc không cất tiếng. Cô thường xuyên “tái chế” các tài liệu lưu trữ và lịch sử truyền miệng, khám phá mối quan hệ phức tạp giữa di sản văn hóa, ký ức, trần thuật và cách kể chuyện.
Tác phẩm của Esther đã được triển lãm quốc tế tại hơn 40 quốc gia. Các buổi chiếu và triển lãm bao gồm Trung tâm Barbican; Liên hoan phim BFI London; CPH:DOX; Viện Nghệ thuật Đương đại, Luân Đôn; Hull 2017 Thành phố văn hóa Vương quốc Anh; Index, Quỹ Nghệ thuật Đương đại Thụy Điển, Stockholm; Istanbul hai năm một lần; Manzi, Hà Nội; Lễ hội Âm nhạc Gió mùa, Hà Nội; NASA, San Francisco; Phòng trưng bày nghệ thuật mới Walsall; Sheffield Doc/Lễ hội; Tate; và Venice Biennale. Các tác phẩm phim và âm thanh của cô đã được phát sóng trên BBC và Kênh 4.
Cô đã được trao Giải thưởng Nghiên cứu Philip Leverhulme về Nghệ thuật Biểu diễn và Nghệ thuật Thị giác, đồng thời hiện là Giáo sư về Nghệ thuật Điện ảnh và Truyền thông tại Đại học Sheffield Hallam, Vương quốc Anh.

On Sofa #3 invites friends from the arts community to gather on the sofa for a cinematic evening together. Participants will watch Dust & Metal (82 mins, 2022) and join a conversation with director Esther Johnson.
🔴 ABOUT THE FILM:
DUST & METAL is a creative documentary feature film by British director Esther Johnson, produced by Johnson and Live Cinema UK and funded by the British Council. The project was created by a unique partnership between Hanoi-based Vietnam Film Institute, and TPD: The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents.
The film presents stories of ‘freedom’ in Vietnam past and present told through the lens of the country’s ubiquitous mode of transport: the motorbike. With a population of 97 million, and 45 million registered motorbikes, the transportation of goods of all types and sizes on the back of motorbikes, including washing machines, entire families, and chickens. The sounds of engines and horns create a symphony of Vietnamese life.
Through the repositioning of difficult to access archive film, contemporary footage, and a live score composed and performed by Vietnamese artist Xo Xinh, DUST & METAL makes rare archive film available to new audiences, and illuminates unfamiliar histories of Vietnam. The script integrates extracts from oral history interviews Johnson made with eminent Vietnamese filmmaker Trần Văn Thủy; and with visual artist Đặng Ái Viet.
A symbol of Vietnam and its history, motorbikes encompass notions of work, class, travel, technology, and escape. Owning one has enabled movement and enterprise for millions of people. During the war in Vietnam, bicycles were invaluable for transporting supplies through the narrow ‘hẻm’. Bicycles have been replaced with motorbikes to navigate the growing waves of traffic. In response to national and international debates on climate change, urban planners and the shift of Vietnamese society in different phases.
Media narratives of Vietnam tend to show the country either through a tourist lens (the Golden Bridge, Ha Long Bay) or through Hollywood versions of the war in Vietnam. Stepping away from dominant depictions, DUST & METAL offers an unorthodox perspective of Vietnam that merges sound and vision for an immersive appreciation of a unique cultural heritage.

🔴 ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Esther Johnson (MA, Royal College of Art) is an artist and filmmaker whose works sit at the intersection of artist moving image and documentary practice. Through film, sound, photography, and archival materials, Esther’s work explores overlooked and marginalised social histories, foregrounding narratives of community, resistance, and the making of place. Central to her practice is an engagement with absence and omission in the historical record, examining how power shapes which stories are told, preserved, or silenced. She frequently reworks archival materials and oral histories, exploring the complex relationships between cultural heritage, memory, testimony, and storytelling.

Esther’s work has been exhibited internationally in over 40 countries. Screenings and exhibitions include the Barbican Centre; BFI London Film Festival; CPH:DOX; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Hull 2017 UK City of Culture; Index, The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm; Istanbul Biennial; Manzi, Hanoi; Monsoon Music Festival, Hanoi; NASA, San Francisco; The New Art Gallery Walsall; Sheffield Doc/Fest; Tate; and the Venice Biennale. Her film and audio works have been broadcast on the BBC and Channel 4.

She was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Research Prize in Performing and Visual Arts, and is currently Professor of Film and Media Arts at Sheffield Hallam University, UK.
