About this Event
NOTE: No registration needed, this is a drop-in walk.
Join NYC H2O for a two-hour walk along the historic waterfront of the Harlem River in the Bronx. This tour will visit several recently restored parks and landmarks on the Bronx coastline of the river, including the High Bridge, Highbridge Park and Step Street, and Bridge Park. It will end in Roberto Clemente State Park, at the annual Harlem River Celebration. Along the way, participants will hear about the forgotten history and ecologies of this remote shoreline, which was once home to wetlands, amusement parks, and steamship excursions. The tour will also consider the lack of public access on the Harlem River – along its entire shoreline in the Bronx, there are just two official access points to the water.
This walk will be led by Nathan Kensinger and Duane Bailey-Castro, who have been photographing the Harlem River for the past 15 years, and will include a look at their photographic work. This walk is part of a series called Walking the Harlem River, created for NYC H2O, a non-profit focused on water ecology in New York, and is generously supported by the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program and the Hudson River Foundation.
This walk is open to the first 40 drop-in attendees and is a one-way walk, starting at noon on the High Bridge and ending at 2 PM at Roberto Clemente State Park, as part of the annual Harlem River Celebration
