Woodland Weavers & Spinners 2026/2027 Program YearProgram for the evening: Thom Koster – Temari Balls
Temari are beautifully embroidered balls that began as simple children’s toys in Japan and evolved into a refined textile art form rich with history, symbolism, and mathematical precision. Made by hand, Temari are constructed by wrapping fine thread around a core and then embroidered with intricate designs across the surface of the sphere. This spherical form naturally lends itself to repeating geometric patterns that are both visually striking and structurally unique.
This talk will explore the origins of Temari, introduce the basic process of making one at home, and highlight some of the traditional patterns and motifs commonly found in this art form. The lecture will also touch on regional variations and contemporary approaches.
Thom Koster works in IT and is the chair of tech committee of the Michigan League of Handweavers (MLH). He is an avid weaver and Temari crafter and is currently pursuing the Koutouka Shuuryou (level 2) certification from the Japanese Temari Association.
The speaker will be via Zoom for members. The venue will be open for members and guests.
