About this Event
Octavia Butler is finally getting the recognition as a genius she deserves, but how much Butler have you actually read? And what about the entire generation of afro-futuristic writers she inspired that now dominate the Speculative Fiction shelves at Loyalty? Inspired by the anthology Octavia's Brood, Hannah Oliver Depp and Chantal Tseng will read through Octavia Butler and her literary descendants! Chantal will pair a special drink to match the book each month and Hannah will bring the cultural context of the book's creation for discussion! Our sixth meeting will cover Fledgling , a standalone novel and Butler's final book published in her lifetime.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Octavia E. Butler's final novel is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly unhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted—and still wants—to destroy her and those she cares for, and how she can save herself.
"A master storyteller, Butler casts an unflinching eye on racism, sexism, poverty, and ignorance and lets the reader see the terror and beauty of human nature." —The Washington Post
