Join restoration ecologist and herbalist Michael Yadrick for a slightly witchy, post-Halloween exploration of the plants we eat, heal with, remove, and restore. Through stories of native and introduced plants of the Pacific Northwest, we'll wander through ethnobotany, herbalism, food and medicinal sovereignty, climate adaptation, ancestral knowledge, and the complicated idea of belonging. Along the way, we'll consider what has been lost as many of us have become disconnected from everyday plant knowledge. And what it might mean to rebuild those relationships responsibly.
There will be native plants. There will also be weeds; Michael may say nice things about some of them.
Michael lives in South Tacoma on the traditional lands of the Puyallup Tribe. He tries to bring love, compassion, and harm reduction into the sometimes very serious world of ecological restoration.
Michael is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner and ISA Certified Arborist and works as a Restoration Ecologist with the City of Tacoma's Passive Open Space Program. He is also an herbalist, an original Tacoma Tree Foundation board member, and a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Bolivia, 2002–2004) who served with AmeriCorps in the late 1900s. He studied at The Evergreen State College and earned graduate degrees through American University and the University for Peace in Costa Rica.
