Presented by Shared York CIC, Northern Echoes: Gardens in Harmony brings Yorkshire landscapes and the classical gardens of Suzhou into focus through a visual exhibition, a keynote address and a concert.
Meet others over refreshments, discover new perspectives on familiar landscapes, and enjoy music that moves from the written score to spontaneous creation.

GARDENS IN DIALOGUE
The Classical Gardens of Suzhou & Yorkshire Landscapes
Discover the artistry of Suzhou’s classical gardens, alongside perspectives on Yorkshire’s landscapes. Explore how water, framed views, seasonal change and winding paths shape the way we experience a garden.
The exhibition opens on 20 October and continues until 27 October 2026 at the Creative Centre.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr Christopher Ridgway /Head Curator, Castle Howard
Drawing on his knowledge of Castle Howard, Dr Ridgway will explore the relationship between architecture, gardens and the experience of place, offering a Yorkshire perspective on the evening’s garden theme.
LANDSCAPES IN SOUND
Enjoy a programme of chamber music, vocal performances and Chinese instrumental music, inspired by gardens, flowers, seasons and imagined landscapes.

FEATURING YUANFAN YANG
Pianist · Composer · Improviser
Professor in Improvisation, Royal Northern College of Music
Award-winning pianist Yuanfan Yang brings together the artistry of a concert performer and the imagination of a composer. Born in Edinburgh and based in Leeds, he won the 2025 RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition.
A highlight of the evening is his featured piano performance, combining a solo work with live improvisation inspired by selected audience suggestions.
A familiar tune or an unexpected musical idea could become the starting point for something entirely new. Offer a suggestion or simply enjoy hearing the music take shape.
