A new class starts today (10/14)

The Afterlife & Eschatology
Bible Class Syllabus

Course Description
This class will examine the biblical doctrines concerning death, the afterlife, and eschatology (the study of the last things). We will consider what the Scriptures teach about the human spirit, the state of the dead, the second advent of Christ, the resurrection, and the final judgment. The class will also study some common false teachings regarding final events.
Although death is a serious subject, the follower of Christ should be hopeful and joyful. The Bible teaches that death is a transition from one kind of living to another kind of living (not annihilation).

Course Objectives
By the conclusion of this class, students should be able to:
• Know the biblical teachings about death and the afterlife.
• Identify doctrines that conflict with Scripture.
• Cultivate greater confidence in God’s promises about the future and thereby enjoy greater happiness and contentment in the present.

Materials and Preparation
1. Bring a Bible.
I encourage attendees to bring a Bible to every class. Following the biblical text directly will help each student understand the material and strengthen trust in Scriptural authority.
2. I suggest bringing the King James Version or having access to one.
Please use your preferred translation. I will use the KJV, and having the KJV available will be helpful as we read passages together and follow the same wording.
3. Bring materials for taking notes and making highlights.
Attendees are encouraged to bring paper, pens, pencils, highlighters, electronic devices, and any other materials they find useful for writing notes and marking Bible verses. Making notes and highlights helps people retain what they have learned.

A Word of Encouragement
The study of death and eternity should instill hope in followers of Christ. Let us recognize the uniqueness of the biblical worldview and be optimistic because of Jesus, who lives today.
Paul wrote:
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21, KJV).
May this study strengthen each person’s understanding of the Bible. May it better equip us for eternity and to live each day with joy and confidence.
