In October 2026 New Europe Book Club is reading "The Enchanted Desna" by Oleksander Dovzhenko, one of Ukraine’s most influential filmmakers and a major voice in 20th-century Ukrainian culture. Lost Horse Press has published a new English language translation of "The Enchanted Desna" that is available for purchase online. It is also on order at Multnomah County Library. The library has ordered 2 copies of "The Enchanted Desna" that will be available soon for borrowing.

We encourage our readers to read the book in whatever translation they choose and then watch the 1960's Soviet movie based on the book. The movie came out after the death of Oleksandr Dovzhenko and was directed by wife Yulia Solnsteva.
