About this Event

Upon completion of this intermediate level presentation, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize FDA-approved use, off-label use, and potential misuse of GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  2. Identify common physical consequences of rapid weight loss.
  3. Identify potential side effects and important monitoring parameters related to GLP-1 agonist treatment.
  4. Recognize the complexities of treating patients with eating disorders at any body size in a weight loss-oriented culture.


Description: This presentation addresses the complexities of eating disorder treatment for patients who engage in aggressive weight loss strategies, particularly with GLP-1 receptor agonists. The history, pharmacology, uses, side effects, and expected outcomes of GLP-1 treatment will be discussed, as well as common physical complications of rapid weight loss. Through case studies, participants will practice talking about the elements of informed consent, the importance of regular monitoring, when Medic*tion cessation is appropriate, and the difficulties related to weight recurrence. Concerning trends, such as the distribution of GLP-1 medications through “underground pharmacies” will be addressed, along with special considerations related to pediatric patients and others at higher risk for treatment complications. This presentation will also cover the difficulty related to balancing shared decision-making, respecting patient autonomy, maintaining important boundaries, and preventing misuse. Come prepared to discuss your concerns, inform your decision making, collect important resources, and practice difficult conversations about what our patients at all body sizes face in a weight-centric culture.



This workshop is appropriate for: Mental health professionals, physicians, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, school counselors, school psychologists, health coordinators, and other helping professions with an interest in learning more about the prevention, treatment, and recovery from an eating disorder. 3 Continuing Education Credits available: Psychologists - This program is co-sponsored by The Meadows and iaedp-Tucson. The Meadows is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists; The Meadows maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Participants must be present for the entire presentation (sign in and sign out required) and complete the evaluation in order to obtain a CE certificate.
