Nature in Action: Volunteer in Rowntree Park's Wildlife AreaGet outdoors, have a go at practical conservation and help wildlife thrive in the heart of York. Join the Friends of Rowntree Park for a volunteering session in the park's Wildlife Area as part of York Environment Festival 2026.
Tucked away near the Millennium Bridge entrance, the Wildlife Area is a varied space incorporating a wildlife pond and bog garden, apple orchard, wildflower meadow, working woodland, native hedging and habitats for amphibians, insects, birds and small mammals.
Our volunteers work throughout the year to care for and develop these habitats. Depending on the season and what needs doing, you might find yourself scything meadow grasses, caring for the pond, managing wildflowers, planting and looking after trees, removing invasive species, creating habitats or simply helping with the many practical jobs that keep the area flourishing.
You don't need any gardening or conservation experience. It's a chance to learn practical conservation skills, spend time outdoors, meet other people and make a tangible difference to one of York's much-loved green spaces.
