The National Diamond Open Access Publishing Summit
Presented by the NORF-funded Diamond Ireland Project and its partners
Join colleagues from across Ireland and beyond for the National Diamond Open Access Publishing Summit, hosted by the NORF-funded Diamond Ireland project, at the Trinity Long Room Hub on Wednesday 9th December 2026.
Diamond Open Access offers a sustainable, community-led approach to scholarly publishing where research is made freely available to readers without charging authors publication fees. It places academic communities, public value and knowledge sharing at the centre of the publishing ecosystem.
The future of scholarly publishing is not simply about making research open. It is about ensuring that the systems through which knowledge is created and shared remain open, diverse, community-led and sustainable. At its heart, Diamond Open Access is about more than changing how research is published - it is about strengthening scholarly publishing as part of Ireland's research and cultural infrastructure. A thriving Diamond Open Access ecosystem helps ensure that this infrastructure remains diverse, supporting different disciplines, languages, communities and publishing traditions alongside research excellence.
This national summit will bring together researchers, librarians, publishers, policymakers, funders and those involved in scholarly communication to discuss and explore the opportunities and challenges of building a vibrant Diamond Open Access landscape for Ireland.
Throughout the day, speakers and discussions will consider how we can:
- Reposition scholarly publishing as a shared public good and consider stewardship of ‘open’ landscapes.
- Grow engagement with Diamond Ireland Press, a national platform for Diamond journal and monograph publishing.
- Support independent, society-based, university and culturally significant publishers both within and beyond higher education.
- Strengthen bibliodiversity by supporting publishing across different disciplines, languages, communities and publishing models.
- Build collaborative infrastructure that enables high-quality, ethical and sustainable scholarly publishing for the future.
The summit will showcase the new Diamond Ireland Press and Hub, share practical experiences from Ireland and internationally, and provide opportunities for collaboration across the scholarly publishing community.
Who should attend?
As Ireland builds its open research ecosystem, this summit invites participants to consider not only how research is made openly available, but how we collectively steward the diverse publishing landscape on which research, education and culture depend. Whether you are already involved in Diamond Open Access publishing or are interested in the future of open, equitable and community-led scholarly communication, this event offers an opportunity to contribute to shaping Ireland's national approach.
