“A witty, gory slasher-romance that feels so personal to writer-director Jane Schoenbrun that they’ve essentially sliced out their soul and smeared it on the screen. – Amy Nicholson, Los Angeles Times
Saturday, October 17 screening will be preceded by an introduction from Must-Watch Indies programmer and film critic Marya E. Gates.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Jane Schoenbrun’s latest exploration of identity and media, is a queer romance, a love letter to and deconstruction of the slasher genre, and a metatextual screed against Hollywood’s reboot mania all at once.
Hacks star Hannah Einbinder is Kris, a young Sundance wunderkind who has been hired to direct a reboot of a popular slasher franchise known as Camp Miasma. Although they are supposed to be crafting an origin story for the franchise’s villain Little Death (Jack Haven), the filmmaker instead becomes beguiled by Billy Preston (Gillian Anderson), the reclusive actress who played the final girl in the first film. Her quest to meet the star in person takes her on a trek into the snowy mountains of the Pacific Northwest – and into the depths of her own psyche.
A dense text that begs to endlessly discussed and parsed and an equally fun popcorn romp, Camp Miasma riffs on everything from Sunset Blvd. to the Friday the 13th series to David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive as it pushes the viewer to explore their own relationship with media consumption, face their primal sexual urges and earliest fears, and maybe even discover their own queer roots. The film also features some glorious cameos from filmmakers Avalon Fast (Camp), Louise Weard (Castration Movie Anthology), and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby).
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as the opening film for the Un Certain Regard section and went on to win the festival’s Queer Palm award.
