What can a forest teach us about connection, reciprocity, and our relationship with the land?
For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples have maintained enduring relationships with the lands and waters of the Escarpment—relationships grounded in stewardship, reciprocity, and responsibility to the land and the many beings who call it home.
Thanksgiving weekend offers a chance to pause and reflect on those relationships, as well as the many histories that have shaped this landscape—from Indigenous stewardship to the more recent impacts of settler land use, agriculture, forestry, recreation, and conservation.
Join us for an afternoon in the hardwood forest of Sandy's Summit Nature Preserve with Master Naturalist Bob Bowles as we slow down, look closely, and discover a world that is often hidden beneath our feet.

🌳 Discover the unseen work happening beneath the forest floor—from decomposing organic matter and cycling nutrients to supporting plant communities and forest resilience.

Whether you're an experienced mushroom enthusiast or simply curious about the forest around you, this walk is an opportunity to see the landscape differently—and leave with a deeper appreciation for the complex web of life that makes our forests possible.

Before You Join Us
Please come prepared for an outdoor walk on natural terrain. The route may include uneven ground, roots, rocks, mud, slopes, and other forest conditions. Sturdy, closed-toe footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
Please note: This event is approximately 2-3 km of hiking/ 2 hours and is not wheelchair or mobility-device accessible. There is no washroom on-site so please use the washroom before coming. Participants should be prepared to spend the duration of the event outdoors.
