In this special collaborative workshop, Alicia and Til are excited to bring together their decades of experience in bodywork (Til) and Contact Improvisation (Alicia) to discover how combining these disciplines can open up new options for our moving, dancing, sensing and being. They write: "This workshop in our ongoing collaboration is about tone and release—the moving balance that quietly decides, moment by moment, the quality and the flavor of the dances that we have.
Tone is both what helps us move, and what makes us responsive. With too little, we collapse: there's nothing for our partner to meet, nothing to improvise from. With too much, we go stiff: we can lean, press, even lift; but not yield, shift, or feel and respond to all the subtle communications that make the dancing delicious. Being able to modulate tone helps us find the shifting, alive balance we're after—enough tone to offer something, yet enough release to be influenced, surprised, and taken somewhere we didn't plan on going.
So what is tone, really? How much of it is muscle, how much is fascia, and how much is a nervous system tuned by our biology, our training, our surroundings, and everything that's happened to us? And what about release—what has to happen in the body, the nervous system, and the mind for something to actually let go?
These turn out to be questions about improvisation. Tone and release are how form comes out of formlessness, how structure and flow trade places, how order and entropy meet in a dance. How easily we're influenced—and how fast—shapes how well we can attune: too quick to be moved and we lose ourselves and the co-creation too slow and we miss the moment.
We'll research all of it through hands-on, solo, and partnered exploration: what's going on anatomically and neurologically when we hold and when we let go; functional economy—how little contraction a movement really needs, and how much the skeleton and fasciae can do for us; and a trauma-informed look at hyper- and hypo-reactive tuning, and how that affects our ability to let go. Mostly, we'll practice: what can we learn via hands-on bodywork and dancing, that allows us to flow between our many options for tone and release, given this body, this age, this nervous system, this partner, and this moment?"
Prerequisite: at least some experience in Contact Improvisation. Appropriate for all levels and all bodies.
